How diabetes affects African Americans!

There is no cure for diabetes but you can control it with a proper diet and exercise..

More than 3 million African Americans ages 20 and over have diabetes and many do not even know it. African Americans are at an increased risk for life-threatening complications associated with diabetes, including:

Stroke
Blindness
Heart disease
Kidney disease
Lower limb amputations
Other Vascular Complications

If you have "sugar" ...you have diabetes.
Eating sugar does not cause diabetes.
You can "feel good" and still have diabetes.

Are you at risk?
If you are African American and answer yes to any of the following, you may be at risk for diabetes.

Are you overweight?
Do you rarely exercise?
Are you age 20 or older?
Do you have high blood pressure (140/90 or higher)?
Does someone in your family have diabetes?
Are you a woman who has a history of diabetes during pregnancy, or has a baby weighing more than 9 pounds at birth?

What is diabetes?

*Diabetes affects the way your body uses food.
*In your body, food turns into sugar.
*The blood carries this sugar to cells throughout the body. Insulin (a hormone) helps turn sugar into energy for your body to work.
*When you have diabetes, your body makes little or no insulin, or insulin can't get blood sugar into the cells.
*As a result, your body doesn't get the fuel it needs and blood sugar levels stay too high.
*Over time, those high sugar levels can cause heart and kidney problems, blindness, or the loss of a limb.

What are the warning signs?
Diabetes is a silent disease. It often has a few or no symptoms. However, warning signs may include any of the following:

You feel tired.
You are thirsty often.
You are losing weight without trying.
You have to urinate more often.

What Can You Do?

*Keep your weight under control.
*Be active everyday.
*Eat healthy.
Consume non-starchy vegetables like spinach, broccoli or green beans. Choose whole grain foods such as brown rice, wheat spaghetti or wheat bread. Include fish 2-3 times per week. Eat foods that are low in saturated fat and sugar.
